Genius and madness run on the same machinery. In personality science, the trait behind intensive creativity is openness to experience. At its core is a pattern detector that spots connections others miss. But if you turn that detector up too high, you get false positives. The tendency to see profound connections that don't actually exist is called apathenia.

Left unchecked, it builds magical thinking and deep conspiracy beliefs. Psychologists map this trait as a simplex scale running from madness to genius. Apathenia sits at one end and raw intelligence sits at the other. What decides which way an open mind will tip? The filter. Intelligence acts as reality testing quality control, sorting true insights from random noise.

The visionary and the crank run identical engines, one just has a better filter. Watch the full series finale on the channel right now.
