Why Sadism Is the One Dark Trait With No Upside — At All | | V6 Ep4

For Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy, there are boundary conditions where the traits become conditionally adaptive. For everyday sadism, there are none. This is not a gap in the research. It is the finding. A 2025 systematic review of more than 85 studies found no evidence that sadistic traits enhance performance or are functionally adaptive across any professional domain or level. Unlike narcissism — which shows a curvilinear benefit at moderate levels — sadism shows a linearly negative relationship with leadership effectiveness across the entire scale. Crucially, emotional intelligence training, which meaningfully moderates narcissism and Machiavellianism, is counterproductive for sadism. A high-EI sadistic individual is not a safer one. They are a more sophisticated one, better at identifying when and how to cause harm whilst avoiding detection.
