The loudest person in the room is rarely the actual leader, and the science explains why. Extroversion has two sides, sociability, which is being chatty like in crowds, and assertiveness, which is a readiness to take charge and speak with weight when it matters. We assume they go together, they don't.
It's assertiveness, not sociability, that predicts who leads. A quiet, reserved person who is non-derless, assertive, can lead superbly. The one who says little in the small talk, but when something real is on the table, speaks with calm authority, and the room falls in behind them. Low on chatter, high on presence, that's your leader, not the life of the party.
