Workplace rudeness is contagious, with morning interactions directly impacting your self-control and afternoon behaviour.
We examine how seemingly minor slights in the morning ripple through your day. By understanding the mechanisms behind this behaviour, you can better manage your responses and identify why a colleague might be reacting to previous messages rather than current tasks. This analysis helps you navigate the complexities of office life without falling into reactive patterns.
This is essential for anyone interested in organisational psychology and the subtle ways toxic behaviour spreads across a team. We look at the evidence to help you assess your own contribution to workplace dynamics, offering a clearer view of how to de-escalate tension before it affects your performance.

Rudeness at work spreads in a way most of us simply never notice. Researchers followed employees through two working weeks with short surveys several times a day. Rudeness received in the morning eroded self-control and was followed by rudeness they dished out themselves in the afternoon. A colleague who's difficult with you may partly be responding to the tone of your last message.
How would you check your part of the problem? Thank you.
