The label has got ahead of the instrument it came from. Take the standard ten-question measure apart and most of what it captures is not narcissism: it is emotional instability, with a smaller share of low agreeableness underneath. Its two halves barely relate to each other and only one of them behaves like a dark trait.
Which means a lot of people have had this word aimed at them on the strength of a test that was never measuring what the word implies.

Before you call a colleague a covert narcissist, you need to know this. Researchers took the standard 10-question measure apart to see what it's actually made of. Roughly two-thirds of it turned out to be ordinary emotional instability, and about a fifth was low agreeableness. The 10 questions also split into two halves that have little to do with each other, and only one of them behaves like a dark trait at all.
